Last Tuesday the junior varsity and varsity Lady Dragons traveled to Olton to take on the Lady Fillies. Varsity came home with the win to keep them in first place in the district .
JV took the court first played well but came up short to the Fillies. A sluggish start for the JV ladies caused them to lose the first set, 11-25. In the second set, Coaches Tribble and Bowles got the ladies fired up and they played much better, getting to every ball and improving on their service game. Although their level of play gained strength, they traded points back and for with the Fillies and lost a nail biter, 24-26.
Varsity was playing their second round of district coming off of a heartbreaking loss against West Texas. In the first and second sets, the varsity ladies came out much like the JV, sluggish and slow, losing the first set 18-25. The second set wasn't much better they soon found themselves down two sets to none.
But all of that changed in the third set. The ladies came out hot and rolled to a blazing victory, 25-19 and won the fourth set decisively 25-14, tying it up 2-2.
In the final set to determine the match win, the Lady Dragons came out strong and were ahead 6-10 when the Fillies called a timeout. After the timeout, the ladies put up another point to make it 6-12, but then the tide turned and the Fillies went on an 8 point run to make the score 12-14. With the Fillies only one point away from the match win, senior Leslie Mayo banged a serve over to make the score 13-14. The ladies then got a quick bump set and spike to tie the game.
Mayo got another ace to put the ladies up by one and then freshman Kyanna Hurd, with a great play, spiked the ball for the 16-14 win.
Mayo and Hurd both had an amazing game with 35 total kills: 15 for Hurd and 20 from Mayo. The back row had a tremendous game with Hurd, junior Faith Walker and seniors Hailey Wright, Ali Smith, and Mayo combining for 122 digs to make sure that no ball went untouched. Smith and Walker had 64 total assists between them.
Coach Tribble commented on the nail biter victory saying, “I was a little concerned after game one and two.The girls were sluggish and the little mistakes took their toll. Before game three, I asked the girls if they were ready to go home, and they said no. They played hard for the next three games and showed all of us how much pride and character they really had. I couldn’t be more proud of these girls and the turnaround they made.”
