Lizards on Route to a District Championship

Posted Date: 11/06/2015

The Lizards continued their march towards a district championship last Thursday night against the Motley County Matadors on the Lizards' home turf.  The Matadors received the kickoff and on their first possession scored but the Lizards quickly answer back with the long run by 7th grader Jonathon Henderson.  On Motley's next drive, Henderson intercepted a pass giving the Lizards back the ball. Eighth grader Keyvondra Richardson capitalized on the turnover with a run for a score to put the Lizards up 12-6. The Lizards played some awesome defense, forcing several turnovers on downs.  Behind strong offensive blocking, 8th grader Steven Howard extended the Lizards lead 20-6, after the successful PAT. After a fumble recovery by the Lizards, eighth grader Hunter Gilbert snagged a pass from Henderson and ran for the score to end the half 26-6.

After the half the Lizards took the kickoff to start the third quarter, but fumbled on their first play.  The Mats began the drive pinned against their own goal line and couldn't convert for the first down. With excellent field position, seventh grader Jacob Lecroy scored on the short run. The Matadors quickly fire back, capitalizing on a Lizard penalty and score making the score 32-13. But the Lizards continued to do work with Howard hauling in a pass and running in another score which was complimented by a successful PAT.
On the Matadors' next offensive series, the Lizards recovered a fumble and ran it down to the end zone for a touchdown extending their lead to 47-13. The Matadors refused to give up and answered with a quick touchdown. But with seconds left on the clock, seventh grader Tate Hutchinson takes one to the house to finish the game with the Lizards on top of the Matadors 54-18.
Jonathan Henderson said, “We played with heart. It feels good to get our second district win, but we are still focusing on next week against Patton Springs.”
