Posted Date: 03/13/2016

Seven PHS students toured the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center labs last week. From left to right: junior Garrett Dane, sophomore Dani Medford, sophomore Kylie Oliver, freshman Kyanna Hurd, freshman Marley Beck, senior Carli Holley and freshman Liddy Chambers.

Last week PHS students in the Health Careers program toured the Gross Anatomy Lab, Stimulation Lab, and the Cancer Research Lab at the Texas Tech Health Science Center in Lubbock. For most students the highlight of the trip was the Gross Anatomy Lab, also known as the “cadaver lab” where medical students dissect and study human bodies which are donated for scientific research.  The students didn’t get to see a body, but did get to examine a dissected foot and a heart.

In the Cancer Research Lab students learned that cancerous specimens from all over the country are studied and researched in order to develop treatments for various types of cancer.

The Stimulation Lab is where nursing and medical students go to practice skills and protocols on sophisticated mannequins similar to the one the that the PHS Health Careers program has.  The Stimulation Lab’s mannequins are computerized to simuate simulate different medical scenarios.

“It was very educational and a great experience. I think we should be able to do this every year and I’m very thankful to have Mrs. Inman as a CNA instructor,” said junior Kylee Oliver.

“We had a very educational and enlightening experience. I hope to be able to continue to take the students to the Health Science Center. It’s always a great trip!” CAN instructor Megan Inman added.
