Last week the Paducah Dragons and Lady Dragons tennis team represented in the Crowell Tournament and came home with some wins despite extremely windy conditions. The mixed doubles team of junior Elizabeth Ramos and sophomore Sawyer Thompson were tournament champions.
Ramos and Thompson began their day by defeating a mixed doubles duo from Spur in a pro set, 8-4. Their next match was against Crowell and again they came out on top, 8-4. For the championship, Ramos and Thompson faced another team from spur and had to play the best two out of three sets to win. Bogged down by the wind, the pair ended up in a tie-breaker for the first set but managed to take the set win. In the second set, the pair came out on fire, and at one point was ahead 5-1 before hitting a slump and allowing their opponent to catch up. Thompson and Ramos found the will to win and took the set 6-4 to win the match and the tournament.
Junior Bailey Lambert and freshman Andrea Deleon represented the Dragons in the ladies singles bracket. This was the first tournament for either player. Lambert lost her first match to Matador, 3-8 and came up short against Chillicothe in the second match 2-8. Deleon also gave up both of her matches.
In the ladies doubles bracket, seniors Kristyn Deaton and Hailey Wright played Chillicothe in their first match winning 8-5. Next up they played Crowell where they stumbled and lost the match 1-8. They managed to redeem themselves by dominating their last match against Spur in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 to take third place.
Sophomores Mickalea Frawner and Angelica Garibaldi dropped both of their matches to Spur teams, 5-8 and 2-8. Junior Joseph Garibaldi and sophomore Jacolby Burns, playing in their first tournament lost their first match 1-8 to Chillicothe. Their next match was also against a Chilicothe team where even though they fared better, they still dropped the match 5-6, 1-6. But they still managed to finish in fourth place for the tournament.
Juniors Hayden Palacios and Kameron Todd played a tough Crowell team in their first match, losing 3-8. The first round loss bumped them in to the consolation bracket where they defeated Spur 6-2, 7-5 to win the consolation bracket.
Coach Jori Parks was pleased with the team's overall performance saying, "the weather was terrible, but I thought for the first tournament of the year we did well. Some of our kids have never played tennis before and this was their first tournament, so for them to come out and get a few game wins will really help their confidence. Our more experienced team members performed very well also. We have a few things to work on before district, but I couldn't be more pleased with where they are at this time."
