PHS Doubles Teams Dominate District TennisĀ

Posted Date: 05/03/2016

The PHS tennis team competed in the district meet last week and came away with three doubles teams advancing to the upcoming regional meet in Levelland.
Senior doubles team Kristyn Deaton and Hailey Wright repeated as district champions. Ranked as the number one seed in the bracket, Deaton and Wright drew a bye in to the semi-finals where they met the Knox City team winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. For the championship match, the pair met a team from Spur where they again won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The junior doubles team of Kameron Todd and Hayden Palacios were also seeded number one and drew the bye in to the semis where they met a Spur team. Todd and Palacios advanced in to the finals with a 6-4, 6-4 win where they met the other Spur team. With winds whipping at 30 mph, the pair won the first set handily, 6-3, but struggled in the second set. But a strong performance in the final two games gave them the set win, 7-5.
The mixed doubles team of Elizabeth Ramos and Sawyer Thompson also struggled in their championship match against a Spur team they had defeated two weeks earlier to win the Crowell tournament. They came out on the short end of the match this time to take the silver medal and still advance to regional.
In other action, sophomore doubles team Mickalea Frawner and Angelica Garibaldi knocked off the number two-seeded team from Knox City with a score of 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The pair didn't fare as well in their second match versus Spur, getting dropped 0-6, 1-6.
Sophomore Jacolby Burns and  and Joseph Garibaldi were eliminated in the quarterfinals after a three-hour marathon match against Knox City. The first set went to a tie break which the pair lost, but played aggressively in the second set to win 6-3, but again got mired down in the third and lost the set on a tie-break point.

In the ladies singles bracket, freshman Andrea Deleon, was seeded second and drew a bye in the semi-finals but lost in straight sets to Spur. In the match for the bronze medal, she also lost in straight sets.  Junior Bailey Lambert was knocked from the bracket in the quarterfinals with a straight set loss to Knox City.  Senior Kenneth Neskorik met a tough first seed Matador player and lost in straight sets.
"I couldn't be happier with the team's performance.  I knew the doubles teams stood a great chance of advancing and they didn't disappoint. Our singles players were all brand new and it  they just need some more court time. I was very proud of how all of them played," coach Jori Parks said.
