Twenty two Paducah ISD staff members were certified or re-certified in CPR during the inservice training the week before school started.  Staff members must be certified in CPR but some of the staff did not have to go through training because their certifications were still valid. Certification lasts two years before an employee must re-certifiy. Staff members were also trained in first aid and in the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED).

Principal Will Flemons said, “The whole staff is certified. They all had to learn how to use an AED, the proper procedures for someone who's responsive, and someone who's not responsive.”

According to Flemons, Megan Inman, a registered nurse, instructor for PISD's health careers program and certified CPR trainer, oversaw the staff training.

"You never know the predicament a child could be in. You need to know what you’re doing when you're in that situation.”
