Step in to the halls of Paducah ISD on the first Wednesday of each month and you'll likely notice everyone wearing a college shirts in recognition of College Day. College Day began three three years ago on the Paducah ISD campus. Originally, each teacher chose a college or university to represent inside their classroom and out in the hallway. They were encouraged to put up pennants, flags, and information about their school of their choice. The first two years were used to inform the students about different colleges, universities and trade schools. Display cases in the halls were decorated each month with pennants, flags, shirts, pamphlets, and photos all in an effort to show students just how many college and university options were available to them.

According to counselor Leslie Hutchinson, the goal was to instill college awareness at an early age so students will start thinking about life after high school. Teachers and students were asked to wear a college or military shirt of their choice on the first Wednesday of each month. On this day the halls and classrooms are filled with college shirts from all over the country.

At the end of each school year, each senior’s photo and pennant from the junior college, university, trade school or military branch that they plan on attending is displayed in the hallway.

“In recent times, most jobs require a college education or certificate from trade school; therefore, we would like to encourage the students from an early age to begin thinking about what they would like to do after they graduate, whether it be to go to the military, college or go straight into the workforce. We also encourage them to know that if college is their choice, that it can be attained,” Hutchinson said.
